What Does a Screenwriter Actually Do Day to Day?
A working screenwriter spends most of the day outlining, rewriting and responding to notes rather than drafting fresh pages. A typical week includes writing sessions, calls with producers or executives, and pitching. TV writers also spend time in a writers’ room breaking stories with other writers.

Feature writers and TV writers
Feature writers usually work alone or in pairs on one project at a time, delivering drafts to a producer or studio. TV writers often work in a room, breaking the season’s stories together before individual writers go off to draft episodes.
What does a typical week look like?
A week might include a few focused writing blocks, a notes call on a previous draft, a general meeting with a new producer, and time developing the next pitch. Research, reading and watching are part of the work too.
How much of the job is rewriting?
A lot. Most scripts go through many drafts, each responding to notes from producers, executives, directors or actors. Being able to take a note, understand the problem behind it, and fix it well is one of the most valued skills a writer has.
What skills matter beyond writing?
Pitching an idea clearly, collaborating in a room, meeting deadlines and handling feedback gracefully all affect whether a writer gets hired again.
