How to Know If Your Movie Idea Is Good Enough to Write

A movie idea is strong enough to write when you can state it in one sentence with a clear protagonist, goal and obstacle, and when the premise naturally produces a second act full of escalating problems. If you can list ten scenes the idea forces into existence, it can probably carry a feature.

Can you say it in one sentence?

A logline names who the story is about, what they want, and what stands in the way. If you need three sentences to explain the idea, the story is usually not clear yet. That is useful to know before page one, because a script built on a vague premise tends to wander.

Try the form: when [inciting event] happens, [protagonist] must [goal] before [stakes]. It will feel reductive. That is the point.

Does the premise create a second act?

Many ideas are really a great first act. The setup is exciting, then there is nowhere to go. Write down every situation, complication and set piece the premise suggests. Strong ideas generate more scenes than you can use. Weak ones run dry after the hook.

Why this character?

The best premises pair a situation with the one person least equipped to handle it. A heist is a premise. A heist planned by someone who has never broken a rule is a story, because the plot tests the character.

Can you finish it?

A feature takes months. Choose an idea you care about enough to rewrite several times, in a genre you know as a viewer. Enthusiasm and familiarity carry you through the middle of a draft better than a clever concept does.

Should I write an idea that has been done before?
Yes, if you have a specific angle. Most stories share a premise with something else. What makes a script stand out is the character, the voice and the particular way the idea is executed.
How can I test a movie idea quickly?
Write a logline, a one-page synopsis and a list of ten key scenes. Then pitch it to someone in two minutes. If any of those steps stalls, develop the idea further before drafting.
